Our Mission
Our Mission
The term Social Ecology was first employed by the environmental philosopher Murray Bookchin. He pioneered the now widespread recognition that we as a species not only influence but in fact produce the material and cultural environment in which we live. The Indian subcontinent in particular has a long history of human occupation and it is virtually impossible to separate the culturally produced from the biophysical environment. It is this legacy of broadly materialist thought and practice which the Centre for Social Ecology seeks to contribute to.

Extending the theory and practice of economics beyond commodity exchange to encompass the diversity of embodied non market interactions crucial to livelihood.

CenSE has been founded by a group of experienced individuals working in the field of ecology and development. The organization is intended to provide an institutional space for creative young people from diverse backgrounds to develop and incubate their ideas through mentorship.
